This Russian jumper is Nikolai Andreev, in charge of the Soviet aerial firefighting program. The Soviet equipment was given to the US.

US equipment was donated to the Soviet Union. It snowed the night before the jump in eastern Siberia. The result was quite a few vodka toast at dinner, according to Bill Moody.

Location - Ust Illimsk, eastern Siberia. One of two demo jumps with Russians jumping with American equipment. The plane is an AN2, a popular smokejumper airplane. This first jump was windy, according to Bill Moody, but both he and the Russian jumper landed about ten to fifteen feet from the target. Photographer Doug Bird.

The gentlemen with Bill and Francis were from the 555th paratroopers. 555th paratrooper batallion jumped fires in the Pasayten with ten Forest Service jumpers in 1945. In that year 97 black paratroopers jumped in the Pasayten with ten Forest Service jumpers on the Bunker Hill/Peeve Creek Fire. They were part of a contingent of 300 black paratroopers trained at Pendelton, Oregon about 1945, boosting the smokejumper program which had been diminished by the needs of the military in WWII. It was called the Fire Fly Program. Twenty-three paratroopers also jumped on the Parks Fire in the Pasayten Wilderness, north-northwest of the Pasayten Airport. One hundred paratroopers also hiked (did not jump) to help fight the Spring Coulee Fire in the Okanogan Valley.

Bill became friends with Soviet exhibit officials and invited the to visit the Methow Valley and the North Cascades Smokejumper Base. The tall man left of Bill Moody was a Soviet forester, Vladamir. Far left in the photo is Gary Nelson, Okanogan Forest Supervisor. Bill Moody is in the white jump suit. The other four are Soviets from the exhibit in Spokane.

Bill met Nikolai in 1976 during his trip to the Soviet Union for the US-Soviet technical exchange. Nikolai came on a reciprocal visit in 1977. The Soviet parachute was donated to the US smokejumper program. It aided upgrades of the American parachutes.
